L-Methylfolate supplementation can benefit individuals with a deficient MTHFR (Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase) enzyme. Approximately 40% of the American population carries the C677T mutation, which results in a 40-80% reduction in enzyme efficiency (one mutation = 40%; two mutations = 80%).

This enzyme plays a crucial role in converting folate (vitamin B9) into its biologically active form, methylfolate. Methylfolate is essential for the production of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which are important for mood regulation and are involved in the mechanisms of action of antidepressants.

L-methylfolate is available in various dosages. I typically recommend starting with 5mg for three weeks, then increasing to 10mg for three weeks, and finally moving to 15mg. This gradual increase helps mitigate potential anxiety, which some individuals may experience with L-methylfolate. If anxiety persists for more than a week, discontinuing the supplement is advisable.

I highly recommend taking this whenever there is a mutation in the MTHFR gene - whether one, or two mutations. In my personal experience, I have never had anyone feel worse when adding this to their daily regimen.

*I recommend using this option when first starting because it will allow you to use varying doses: https://a.co/d/fu66g5s
