How Pristiq can help ADHD

Pristiq is primarily an antidepressant, but it has benefits in managing ADHD symptoms due to its mechanism of action, which is very similar to Qelbree. Both Pristiq and Qelbree function to selectively block serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake, leading to increased levels of norepinephrine in the brain. Norepinephrine plays a significant role in attention and focus, which are arguably the most common symptom seen among those with ADHD. By blocking norepinephrine reuptake pumps, Pristiq also enhances noradrenergic neurotransmission, similar to Qelbree.

However, what sets pristiq aside is that the unique way it blocks norepinephrine’s reuptake in the frontal cortex (highly involved in executive functions like decision-making, impulse control, and attention regulation), this leads to an increase in dopamine neurotransmission in this same part of the brain. This is what makes pristiq arguably even more beneficial in treating ADHD symptoms than even Qelbree.

The lack of FDA indication is solely the drug company’s decision not risk paying for extensive clinical trials and potentially not receive an indication. If this would have been studied, it likely would have received the indication, in my opinion. In my practice (probably see 800 clients here that I manage meds for on an ongoing basis), Pristiq is the most effective medication for anxiety, panic, OCD, and especially for those with comorbid ADHD + anxiety. My son is on Pristiq for ADHD because he cannot tolerate stimulant medications and it works really well for him. I just did not want you to think I recommended pristiq without consideration of alleviating symptoms of ADHD.

Anxiety can significantly impact ADHD by worsening symptoms like inattention, restlessness, and difficulty focusing. When someone with ADHD also has anxiety, the anxiety can make it even harder to manage ADHD symptoms, creating a cycle where each condition intensifies the other. Because of this, treating the anxiety is crucial, and medications like Pristiq, can make a big difference for someone with ADHD - and especially when also having anxiety. By reducing anxiety, Pristiq indirectly improves ADHD symptoms, making it easier to focus and stay calm.
