ADHD, an executive function disorder, can significantly impact both the patient's and their family's lives, extending beyond basic focus concerns to affect social, academic, economic, safety, physical, and emotional domains. While medications can help with some of these issues, they are not a cure. Treatment often involves a multifaceted approach, including specialized changes or supports in diet, physical activity, various forms of therapy, school environment/supports, and parenting styles.

Below is a basic list of resources to help understand and address ADHD's impact and how to mitigate its effects:

Addressing external factors: can greatly reduce ADHD symptoms. Each person's ADHD and comorbidities are unique, so these ideas may vary in effectiveness for each child:

Good sleep hygiene: Establishing a consistent bedtime routine with 9-12 hours of sleep for 6-12 year olds and 8-10 hours for teenagers. Avoiding screens and ensuring a cool bedroom environment can promote better sleep.

Exercise & Sports: Regular aerobic exercise can benefit ADHD symptoms by expending excess energy, promoting teamwork, mindfulness, and improving balance.

Balance training: Activities like surfing, biking, soccer, and martial arts can strengthen the cerebellum, potentially helping to overcome ADHD deficits.

Diet: Avoiding processed and high-sugar foods can be beneficial. While some diets may help, it's essential to find what works best for your child.

School accommodations: Psychoeducational testing and tailored accommodations through the school can support academic success.

Therapy: While not necessary for all patients, various types of therapy can be beneficial, such as executive function coaching, neurofeedback treatment, and family therapy.

Additionally, here are some resources for parents:

Online resources: Websites like ADDitude and CHADD offer educational information and support.

Podcasts: Podcasts like those from ADDitude and by ADHD coaches provide valuable advice and recommendations.

Books: Books by experts like Russel Barkley, Ph.D., can offer advice on managing ADHD in children. Here is an example: https://a.co/d/7w6QHco
